Silent Night was originally sung in public on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria A young priest, Father Joseph Mohr, wrote the lyrics. The music for voice and guitar was composed by Franz Gruber, a school teacher.
